Survive on Mars, Part 1

SUMMARY: Survive on Mars was born out of a need to revive student enjoyment of game days. Game days are a popular day in each twoo week cycle, but by the month of April seeing the same Build a Brain template, even the small updates of having the points the student win being related to the modules, students were starting to show less enthusiasm. So, by including students in the idea phase of how we can liven up the two modules for plants everyone got really fired up on the idea of using The Martian as the theme. It was perfect because the movie was recently released and the main character survives because of applying his botany skills. The early survival stage of part 1 makes it more linear than part 2 will b. this is good because it establishes the story for students that have not seen the movie and make ramping up to the novel format a little easier for student and teacher alike. In part two, next module, student decisions can take the game play into unique directions and gives students opportunity not only to recall module rote information, but gives them opportunities to to use critical thinking. More on that in the next module.

Team Players and Scoring Board

Transcript:

(Above) Notes from prototype play: Three different sessions of biology ran through the prototype game play and I found that they were far less interested in winning points than they were in the traditional format. This game day has a more cooperative goal and that is to keep the astronaut alive. When one team missed the question, the other team was jumping in as a second chance to save the hero as opposed to stealing the point. That was gratifying to watch.

Call for team leaders and let students set themselves up into two teams. Set up the team huddle break out room. You are ready to play. Return here after each team successfully answers a question and add a point (tally marks are useful).

Challenge 1: Find the Botany Hab

Transcript:

Story: The crew would have been leaving the next day, but a ferocious Martian storm and an explotion of the Central Hab led to a chaotic emergency evacuation to the ship to get it off the ground before it would be damaged and everyone end up stranded. In the frantic escape Mark Watney is struck by debris and hurled into the darkness. It is assumed that he was killed and with the rocket that will be their escape ship tipping precariously it is decided that the crew will begin take off procedures and not wait to locate the body.

Mark awakens with a startle. It is dark but the wind is now gone and all he sees at first is his oxygen level wanrning and he begins to pull together his memories. He soon discovers why his oxygen levels are low, his visor on his helmet is cracked. His life hangs in the balance of finding the Botany Hab. He knows the Central Bab could never have survived the explosion that sent everyone scurrying for the ship.

To the students: Mark will successfully make it to the hab if you answer the hab question correctly.

Pull the hab question out and read it. Students move to their team huddle room. When the team that is up returns, bring all students to the main room. If the team that is up misses the question, the other team can step up to try to save Mark and gain the point.

Move the oxygen level down and turn it red t o add a little intensity

Rover Challenge

Transcript:

Since the Central Hab is gone, another way to contact NASA will have to be determined. Give students a chance to think about the Rover. This next question will be for Mark to find it. IT was not designed for voice communication, so once the students earn the Rover, expalin that NASA does still monitor the Rover, but it may take a while for it ot be noticed. Explain the Mark sets up a sign in front of the Rover's camera that says he survived and for them to point the camera to the sign to the left when they get the message. Communication will be thorugh Mark writing on signs and NAsa pointing the camera to the response. They let Mark know that it will be years before they can get a rescue to him.

Must Find Years Worth of Food Challenge

Transcript:

Mark explores the Hab. He needs to find a way to get years worth of food or else he will starve. This was the botanist's Hab, so there is some hope. All the plants from experiments were pulled up and added to the composting bins and are too far gone to be planted again. He checks the Hab's galley. He finds some potaotes that were were still vacuum sealed from when the crew enjoyed Thanksgiving with real food that was brought along specifically for that purpose. Each question can be answered on the right and by ungrouping that growth can be added to the potato.
